The HIJO device
HIJO Contains a mini-computer, a number of internet of things devices (IoT) and a rechargeable power source. The device itself has a display and 11 input keys which are aligned to the ‘Circumplex Model of Affect’.
Data, AI and behavioural reporting
HIJO uses AI analytics to overlay key environmental data around movement, mood, social interaction, light and temperature. We process the data collected at the device into intelligent reports that can be accessed through secure portals. The data will be saved in the cloud and behavioral patterns are identified using AI and machine learning. These patterns will be made available via controlled access portals.
The immediate data HIJO collects and analyses can inform:
Government for more targeted use of resources and funding
Education Departments for clearer analysis of high need areas and insight into possible factors influencing mental health conditions

What the industry is saying
“Students loved having the ability to share their feelings with their teacher using HIJO! Being able to subtly report how they were feeling during different times of the day allowed students to provide their teacher with additional information to support their overall wellbeing”.
Ryan Stanley, Principal
Ocean Air Primary School, San Diego
“On top of this, as a teacher, I’ve been able to receive real-time notification on their wellbeing, which in turn, helped me ensure they were ready to learn. My students loved the option of pressing a button to request help, as opposed to putting their hands up - another reason as to why HIJO has been so beneficial!”
Dirk Jordan, Grade 6 Teacher
Berwick Chase, Melbourne
“As a father and as the Head of Impact at SecondMuse, I’m very excited at the impact HiJo will have. Giving students a voice and helping them identify their emotional experience will be critical in the prevention of many of the challenges our young people face. I’ve seen many new ventures over my time, and HiJo has got what it takes”.
Dr Stuart Gill, Global Head of Impact at SecondMuse
“HIJO is an innovative product that directly aligns with the vision of the Del Mar Union School District. We are in the ‘unrelenting pursuit of the extraordinary school experience,’ and achieving this requires that our students have access to high quality products that support student personalization and agency”
Shelley Petersen, Assistant Superintendent,
Instructional Services, Del Mar Union School District, San Diego
“HIJO is a thermometer of the social climate of the school”
Prof Craig Olsson, Director - Centre for Social and Early Development,
Deakin University Melbourne
“As head of the Districts Technology Department, I was fortunate enough to be part of the process from deployment through to the end of the month long pilot. HIJO was a big hit!”
Chris Delehanty, Executive Director of Capital Programs & Technology
DMUSD
“It is great because it allows the students to have privacy. Sometimes they put on a cloak saying everything is fine and everything is great when really they aren't feeling too good and won't discuss this until they feel as if they are in a safe, private and comfortable environment. For me to then be able to instantly track this and provide the students with the correct aid, makes Champion Life’s Wellbeing Monitor a really powerful tool.”
Teacher, NSW

Data Security
At HIJO, we are dedicated to protecting the privacy of our students and their families. HIJO, a website available at www.hijo.ai (“the Site”), along with a web-based and mobile application (“Applications”) make up a suite of services (collectively, “the Services”) owned and operated by Closegap Inc. (“the Company”, “we”, “us” or “our”). We created HIJO as an emotional health inquiry and management tool that enables school staff and parents to support the emotional needs of students throughout the day. The privacy of our adult users: teachers, school social workers, school psychologists, school counselors, school staff, school administrators (collectively, “Educators”), and parents or legal guardians (collectively, “Parents”), and the privacy of children and students (collectively “Children”) who use the Services are extremely important to us. We’ve created this Privacy Policy to clearly communicate how we protect, disclose and use the information we collect when HIJO Services are used. HIJO has developed privacy practices to align with applicable laws, including the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”).
INFORMATION WE COLLECT
Educators and Parents
When creating an account, educators and parents are asked for the same personal information: first and last name, school, phone number, email address, password and role. After registration, they create profiles for their students (or children) and input personal information for them.
Children
Personal: When creating profiles for children, educators and parents are asked for the child’s first and last name, email address, school, grade, birthdate, homeroom teacher and gender.
Emotional, Behavioral & Experiential: Through the use of the student facing Services, children record how they’re feeling, what those emotions feel like in their bodies, how much energy they have for the day ahead, if they’ve eaten breakfast, if they’re experiencing bullying and other related topics.
HOW WE USE THE INFORMATION
We’re committed to protecting the personal information of our users. We do not sell or rent user information to anyone. Our primary goal in collecting information is to provide and improve our Services for your use. The personal information we collect from parents, educators and students is used to provide and improve HIJO services, contact you about services or products that may be of interest to you, and notify you of any changes in our services. The emotional behavioral and experiential information we collect from students is used by educators and parents to better understand the experience of the kids they support. This information is sent to an easy-to-understand dashboard which parents and educators can access on a daily basis. Educators use this information to track the emotional experience of their students so they can respond to behavioral escalations and student needs in real-time, to inform their use of interventions, to carry out interventions and to track the efficacy of interventions. Parents use this information to understand the emotional experience of their kids throughout the school day and intervene when necessary.
DATA ACCESSIBILITY
Student personal information may be accessed by educators, parents and students for review and correction at all times, either through school staff or by logging into their account.
DATA RETENTION
HIJO does not retain student personal information for longer than necessary to deliver services. If a student profile is inactive for more than 12 months, student data will be deleted immediately from all servers and technologies used by Closegap.
DISCLOSURE OF YOUR INFORMATION
HIJO partners with third party organizations to deliver a robust service offering for educators, parents and students. In some cases, we share personal, behavioral, emotional and/or sensational information of our users for the sole purpose of providing and improving our services for your use. We will not share personal information for any other purpose. All third party organizations we partner with have a mission similar to ours and goals that align with our vision of creating better life outcomes for all students. We will only contract and share student information with third party organizations consistent with the principles we’ve outlined in this Policy. HIJO will only contract with future companies that are consistent with the principles we’ve outlined in this Policy.
SUCCESSOR ENTITIES
If HIJO is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of its assets, you will be notified via email and a prominent notice on our website, of any change in ownership, with options regarding your personal information including removing it from HIJO systems entirely. Any company acquiring all or a part of Closegap’s assets will be required to agree to the terms of the Privacy Policy detailed here.
